Shellharbour MP backs her Firefighters 3 September 2008
With the Union now close to the end of the court case dealing with our wages, members have continued to visit local MP’s and win support for the Union’s ‘Public Safety Not For Sale’ campaign. While some areas of the state have had more success than others the Illawarra have so far delivered better results than most.

The latest MP to come on board has been the Member for Shellharbour Lylea McMahon.

McMahon is the latest MP visited by Illawarra members to come out strongly in support of our campaign. In a letter to Emergency Services Minister Nathan Rees  Lylea McMahon has stated that she will not support the closure of any fire station in her electorate nor any reduction in working conditions for firefighters.

While the member of Shellharbour has now come out clearly in support of firefighters, her public statement only came through after a series of delegations from different brigades and different platoons visited her and urged her support. Illawarra members organised a campaign in the electorate that included phone calls, visits by constituents, stories in the local media and leafleting in the MP’s electorate.

All members should now be doing exactly the same and drawing out MP’s to write letters and circulate media statements clearly explaining that they will not allow firefighters wages or conditions to be cut or fire stations to close. FBEU members wanting support or assistance in lobbying politicians should contact the Union ASAP.
